National Philanthropy Day is Officially recognized as November 15.  This year the TELUS Victoria Community Board handed out $192,900 to 23 local organizations.  The work done by Badminton Victoria was selected as one worthy of receiving a contribution.  Our Regional Coach Brad Jawl accepted the $5,000 donation for our Schools Program.
Last year the regional coach Mike Alexander (from Kippens, Newfoundland) was passionate about visiting and helping schools to provide the kind of programs that he was familiar with in his home province.  This year Brad Jawl, with his volunteers, has continued this work.  The Schools Program has been well received by students and teachers.  Badminton Victoria is excited to be able to continue offering this service with the help of the TELUS funding.

The "Muriel Knott Classic - Saanich Open Badminton Tournament" is running from November 19 – 24 and hosted by the Brentwood Bay Badminton Club. This is one of the most fun and accessible tournaments of the year. The week will include Parent-child, Handicapped, and Masters Competitive play. Click To Download Registration and Contact information.
Muriel Knott was born in 1917 and started playing Badminton in the old Steam Power Plant on the site of the Port Royal Housing Development. She then moved to playing at the first real facility in the area, the West Road Hall. That Hall was rebuilt during the Depression in what is now the Brentwood Community Center. She won the Saanich Open in 1933 and 1935, and went on to become ranked #3 in Canada.
Murial put countless hours into Badminton and was passionate about it as a Life Long Sport. She ran Junior programs for many years. Her daughters Anne and Pat have taken over the running of the tournament and continue in the family tradition. They point out that the schedule and the spirit of the Tournament is the same as the first year it started when the Brentwood Bay Community Center was built. And if you listen closely you can hear Muriel say, "Thanks for coming!".

    THANK-YOU to CLAIRE SHARPE!
Badminton Victoria and the Regional Badminton Centre recognized the contribution by one time Olympian and former President, Claire Sharpe, for her service and dedication to local Badminton; especially in the development of Junior programs and athletes. She was presented with a beautiful plaque at the recent Bad Vic Board meeting. Congratulations were extended, along with light refreshments and cake. The Board hopes Claire will continue to support the association in a variety of ways.

    Susie Nute,
    Acting President, Badminton Victoria
