New Coach, New Era for Badminton Victoria
Badminton Victoria, in partnership with Badminton BC and PacificSport, has hired a new Regional Performance Coach.  The new coach is Mike Alexander of Kippens, Newfoundland (near Cornerbrook on the west side of Newfoundland).

Claire Sharpe, Olympian, Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist and now President of Badminton Victoria, is very happy to have Alexander coming to Victoria.  "We are very fortunate to be getting a coach of Mike’s experience, enthusiasm, and commitment to developing badminton athletes and coaches. We are grateful for the partnership we have with Badminton BC and PacificSport which has enabled us to attract a coach of his calibre and commitment.”
“Mike has been involved in Badminton Canada programs for several years which will strengthen Victoria's link to the national scene.  We look forward to great things for Badminton Victoria while working towards a dedicated badminton facility for the Victoria region,” says Sharpe.
With over 15 years of coaching behind him, Mike is a National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level 3 Certified Coach. His most recent experience was Manager/Coach of the Atlantic Development Initiative with Badminton Canada and Assistant Coach for Canada's National Under 17 Team at the 2006 Pan Am Championships.  Mike brings with him a wealth of experience as a teacher, Provincial Technical Director, and Provincial Coach for Badminton Newfoundland and Labrador.

Brock Turner, Executive Director of Badminton BC, is ecstatic to have someone of Mike’s ability coming to Victoria.  “Victoria has been a hotbed of talented Badminton players over the years and we want to continue the tradition. Mike’s energy and passion for the sport became quite clear very early in the hiring process.  We are excited about the opportunities that he can create and take advantage of.  Mike has been on the forefront of national and international Badminton programs and is looking to take a major step to be in one of the powerhouses in Canadian Badminton.”

“There are great coaches and fantastic athletes in BC and I look forward to working with them,” says Alexander.  “I have been waiting for an opportunity like this for some time and it couldn’t be in a better place.”

Alexander will look to continue the legacy of developing local players through the provincial system and onto National teams.  He will be working directly with Al Mawani, Badminton BC’s Provincial Performance Coach to identify talented players and to work with their coaches to make sure they are on a program that will take them to the top.

Badminton Victoria is the regional sport organization for the sport and provides school and community level programs through to high performance programming through local clubs and its own programs.  A large component of the club programs are for Masters competitive and recreational players - age 25 and above.
